Skincare 101

In my younger years, my skincare regimen consisted of a morning coat of make-up applied to brighten up the remains of the previous night. A damp washcloth to wipe away the mascara smeared down the side of my face, a swipe of lip gloss, and I was out the door.

Thankfully, I have grown since then, and so has my beauty regimen. I understand this is not true for everyone, though, and skincare routines can be intimidating and expensive if you lack the knowledge to create a product line-up that meets your specific needs.

Let’s break down the basic steps (in proper sequence) by outlining what they do, their level of importance, necessary frequency, and some tried and true options from Sorella Apothecary.

1. Cleanser – Essential – 2x Daily (Morning, Evening)

Your skin should really be cleansed twice daily, once in the morning and once at night. Clear, healthy skin requires that the make-up, oil and dirt that accumulates on our face throughout the night and day be removed. Your cleanser is the single-most important step you can take toward achieving bright, beautiful skin.

Sorella’s apricot mango cleansing milk is a great option as the hydrating formula cleanses while also pumping much needed moisture into your skin. It’s cost-effective, too, as a little bit goes a long way.

2. Toner – Essential – 2x Daily (Morning, Evening)

This very necessary step gets skipped the most often, but it actually provides some of the biggest benefits to your face. Toners rebalance the skin’s pH levels and help to minimize the appearance of pores.

A quick spritz is all you need to prep skin for the following steps in your beauty routine, and the spiced wine toner is a non-negotiable addition for those folks dealing with oily or acne-prone skin.

3. Serums – Elective – Daily (Evening)

Think of serums as a tailored prescription for your face. While they are not essential for every person, they actually treat the specific issues plaguing your complexion. Wrinkles, fine lines, acne, discoloration, dry or flaky skin – all of these things can be helped by adding the correct serum to your regimen.

The two most popular options we carry are the main squeeze hydrating serum and the lemon lightening serum, the first formulated to plump tired and aging skin, and the second designed to correct redness, inflammation and discoloration.

4. Eye Cream – Elective – Daily (Evening)

It is generally prescribed that the earlier you start using eye creams, the better. They help maintain the eyelid’s thickness and elasticity and work on preventing the appearance of fine lines and pesky crow’s feet. Find your inner hipster and try the yogurt kale eye concentrate for the most noticeable results.

5.Moisturizer – Essential – 2x Daily (Morning, Evening)

You should be moisturizing your face and neck at least twice a day. Period. Skin that is dry and under-hydrated shows the fine lines of age much more prominently. Sorella’s blueberry milk moisturizer is a great all-around option. It’s thin, non-greasy texture is easy to apply and does not leave your face feeling sticky or oily as many products can.

1.Exfoliants – Elective – 1x Weekly

Nearly everyone can use a good exfoliant once a week. Get your money’s worth with the dual-use mint poppy polish that acts as both an exfoliant and a mask or choose from the intoxicating blackberry lime fruitfoliant or intensive cherry pepper peel to slough off dead cells and bring forward a fresh face.

6. Masks – Elective – 1x Weekly

Masks provide an added boost to our regular skincare routine. They also give us an excuse to take fifteen minutes to ourselves and decompress. Treat yourself to a spa session in your own bathroom with the rose hip warming mask. This product, intended for both normal and combination skin, gives your face a dose of relaxing heat while detoxifying pores and smoothing your complexion.
